We used Drupal, forums, organic groups and for one site the option to email comments and contributions directly from any connected device to the discussion thread.

Used well and on the basis that all users link into the site on a regular basis the amount of emails sent to discuss work can be reduced and what is even more important the contributions are there for all to see in chronoligical order, searchable, any time from anywhere - no more great ideas lost in a pile of emails.

And these Virtual Offices provide an ideal platform for focused RSS feeds and semantic web seach engines (automated "Cloud searchers") allowing the system to search for your topic on a regular basis and keeps your and your staff's eyes on the job - not some social network.
